Internship and Externship

Internship-Experience-Refle.jpgThe New Jersey Equine Clinic offers two (2) internship positions to graduate veterinarians from accredited veterinary schools each year.  The New Jersey Equine Clinic Internship program is designed to help prepare graduate veterinarians for specialty residency training and/or private practice.  Interns are responsible for daily patient care in the clinic and work with supervision of senior staff veterinarians in the diagnosis and treatment of horses admitted to the clinic or seen as outpatients.  Previous interns from the New Jersey Equine Clinic have gone on to pursue residencies in surgery, anesthesia, and pathology, while others have chosen successful careers in private equine practice throughout the United States.

Veterinary students who are interested in applying for the NJEC internship program should contact Dr. Jennifer Smith at  Requirements for application include a curriculum vitae, a letter of intent, and 3 letters of recommendation from references of the applicant's choice.  Applicants must be citizens of the United States of America.

The New Jersey Equine Clinic provides opportunities for veterinary and pre-veterinary students to participate in clinical experiences at our practice.  Interested students spend brief periods of time observing clinical practice at our clinic, usually for 2 to 4 week periods.  These students are exposed to diagnostic, therapeutic, and practice management theory during their stay with us.   The externship experience also serves as an excellent means for veterinary students to “interview” with us and evaluate the New Jersey Equine Clinic for a possible internship following graduation from veterinary school.

Students interested in applying for a NJEC externship should contact Dr. Smith at to schedule.  Requirements for application include a current curriculum vitae or resume and a brief letter of intent stating the applicant's career goals.  On site housing is available on a limited basis.
